Valentine’s Emoji Cookies

I hope you don’t mind if I get a little emoji-nal on you today. Ok not really, I just wanted to use that cheesy pun. But I am pretty excited to share these emoji cookies with you? Why? Because I tried something new to me, fondant covered cookies! I’m a little guilty of getting too comfortable and reluctant to try something new sometimes. I’m often the last one to jump on a bandwagon…like the person running after saying “waiiiiittt”. Yea, that person. Or the person that buys only one brand of something and eventually buys the entire line of that something and would rather go to another store to get her dish soap then buy another brand for now…I’m looking at you Method. (Did I just admit to having the habits of an 80 year old?) So you can say these cookies were a bit emoji-nal for me. I’ve always been a simple royal icing kinda girl when it comes to my cookies. While I’ve seen other people use fondant and I use fondant on other treats, I’ve never actually connected the two. Mostly out of concern for taste honestly, but the simplicity and options for fondant covered cookies has always kept me intrigued.

GET READY FOR PUFFY HEART EYES!

A few weekends ago I was sitting in a class at BASH conference taught by the wonderful Allison Faulkner from The Allison Show (GO CHECK HER OUT!) where she shared her awesome Emjoi party. It was adorable, and I wanted in on the emoji fun as well! I knew once I got back emoji cookies had to be on my “to make” list. And since fondant cookies were also somewhere hidden deep on that list (probably in the “things that I’m afraid” of section) I said let’s do this! And I’m so glad I did. How fun are these guys?!?!?

Valentine's emoji cookies

They were so fun and easy to make and the kids absolutely loved them and got to help out a little too, which is always a major plus. They aren’t normally anywhere near when I royal ice cookies. I didn’t do a step by step with this post because honestly, I was having so much fun I forgot to stop and take pictures – epic blogger fail! But they are so easy, you really don’t need any pictures!

RECIPES

SUPPLIES

  • fondant
  • yellow gel color
  • red gel color
  • black gel color

You can buy the colors separately of course, but if your just starting out decorating treats I highly recommend starting with this simple gel color set. It can be found at most craft stores or online.

TOOLS

  • large circle cookie cutter
  • small circle cutter
  • small heart cutters
  • variety of small cutters including a heart

OR

I didn’t link specifically to each little cutter because there were a lot of them, however, it’s less about having these exact cutters and just getting creative around the kitchen for what you can use as shapes. I do however reccomend this cutter set for anybody who needs a set of small cutters to keep around. If your just looking for a simple and quick DIY cookie project go the food pen route for sure!

BAKE COOKIES + COLOR FONDANT

I started off by making my cookies with this recipe and process. The biggest thing I do want to note is that no matter how great your recipe is, cookies still spread. So if you are using the same cutters for cookie and fondant you’re going to have cookie showing – which is totally ok! But if you want them mostly covered like mine, try to use a stacking set. you can cut the cookies with one size and then the fondant with the next size up. Both heart and circle cutters I used here were super cheap and I found them at Wal-Mart. After baking and cooling it’s literately just roll colored fondant, cut, and place! For the smaller pieces I used a tiny bit of warm water and a food safe paint brush to “glue” the pieces on.

DECORATE EMOJI COOKIES

As far as cutting pieces go, get creative and look around your kitchen to see what you have to make these similar cuts, you will be suprised at what you find! Here are the cutters I used. All of the tiny cutters came form Autumn Carpenters accent set which I absolutely love and highly recommend purchasing! I find uses for them alllll the time – life savers! You can also use things like straws and frosting tips to get small shaped that you may need.

Wouldn’t these make the perfect Valentine’s treats to send off with those emojin-nal tweens and teens?! You would totally be a winning mom with emoji cookies that’s for sure.
